Are YOU getting your Money's Worth When Buying Traffic? . . .

The beginner's guide to tracking click-throughs and ROI from pay-per-click engines.

If you're just beginning to try your hand with the pay-per-click engines, one thing you need to know is the importance of setting up tracking URL’s so you're better able to track click-throughs and sales.

Why go to the trouble? Because if you don't set up some sort of tracking system, you'll never know if your keyword purchases are really working for you. And if you don't know if they're working for you, you won't be able to make an educated decision on whether or not to discard a keyword campaign, expand it, choose different keywords, etc.

There are some excellent software programs and services on the market that will track individual keyword purchases and determine your ROI (return on investment), and we'll name some of them at the end of this article. For those who purchase large numbers of keywords, such programs are crucial.

But this article is for those who are just getting started and who don't want to invest in a software program yet – they just want to purchase a few keywords and get their feet wet with the pay-per-click engines.

Using a Tracking URL to Track Traffic

Overture claims that 95 percent of all Overture traffic comes from their partner sites, such as Yahoo and MSN. So, it’s important to track your Overture traffic so you can be sure how much traffic you're getting for each of your keyword purchases.

Let’s say that your URL is (http://www.english-bulldogs.com). To add tracking capability to such a URL, you'd tack on:

?source=Overture

...so your URL would look this:

If the keyword phrase you're tracking is english bulldog puppies, here’s the tracking URL you would use:

Change the URL you have listed with Overture for that keyword phrase to the tracking URL by going to Overture’s Managed Listing Section of the DirecTraffic Center.

If the URL already has a question mark in it, you will have to add &source=Overture to the end. For example:

From: (http://www.english-bulldogs.com/search.cgi?q=dogs) To: (http://www.english-bulldogs.com/search.cgi?q=dogs&source=Overture&kw=english +bulldog+puppies)

If the URL has a # character, the ?source=Overture will need to be inserted prior to the # sign. For example:

From: (http://www.english-bulldogs.com/#oscar) To: (http://www.english-bulldogs.com/?source=Overture&kw=english+bulldog+puppies#oscar)

Be sure to test the new tracking URL to verify that the modified URL works as well as the original, and don't use the tracking URL for anything other than tracking your pay engine traffic.

After setting up the tracking URL’s, you should be able to look for source=Overture in your server log files to see how much traffic you're getting from Overture for each of your keyword phrases. Your log analysis software, depending on which one you use, will be able to compile that information for you.

But How Do You Know Which Traffic Converts to Sales?

Determining your conversion rate is easier if your site supports some type of user session tracking, such as cookies, server-side scripting, etc. If you create a user session (or set a cookie) when someone visits your site, then you can count how many user sessions contained a successful page view that will let you know that a desired action has been completed, such as a receipt of goods sold or signing up for your newsletter. You can then analyze the referral source for each of your user sessions to count how many conversions came from Overture based on each keyword phrase.

How Can You Set up User Session Tracking?

Editors note: These instructions will apply to those of you already running your web sites on Microsoft's IIS.

Dave Barry of SmartCertify explains:

Session Tracking is made possible by using .asp (active server pages) on your Web site. There are several ways in which to accomplish this. One is by assigning a query string value to your link or using the referrer information to assign a proper code to track. In the asp environment, there is a large collection of information that you have access to, including the exact page the visitor came from, and if a search engine, the keywords used to find your site.

Let us look at these two options.

Assigning a query string value to your link.

This method can work in pay-per-click engines, but when working with other engines and links, it can become cumbersome and not always work. By assigning a query string, you are adding a value to your URL that will appear in your server log files allowing you to search for it to see how effective it is working.

Example line from log file:

2002-12-23 19:25:10 192.168.20.14 443 /Default.asp TrackingQueryString=TrackingCode 32 Mozilla/4.0+(compatible;+MSIE+6.0;+Windows+NT+5.0; +Hotbar+4.1.5.0;+.NET+CLR+1.0.3705)

Please note that right after the page name, Default.asp is the query string that was attached to the URL. Also note the browser type, time, and date are included as well. You can set your logfiles to log the information you want. This is done at the server level. If your ISP is in charge of your server, consult with them to make the changes.

Using the referrer information to code your visitors.

When a user clicks a link that leads to your site – whether coming from a search engine or not – they arrive carrying luggage with them that you may not know about. This “luggage” is called the “Server Variables Collection.” With this information, you can track exactly where each visitor came from and what search words they used to get there.

To find the Server Variables Collection enabling you to track where each visitor comes from along with the search words they used, add the following code to an asp page and view it in your browser:

Dave has set up a video file that will help explain tracking in more detail. To view it, go to: (http://www.smartcertify.com/seo/jan/tracking.asp)

Remember: The number of sales from Overture for a particular keyword phrase divided by the number of visits from Overture (or its partners) for that keyword phrase is what constitutes (equals) your conversion rate.

And, the profit generated from your Overture campaigns per keyword phrase divided by the amount spent at Overture per keyword phrase is your return-on-investment (ROI).

Using Your Affiliate Program to Track Sales

If you have an affiliate program, you can also track sales by using your affiliate software. After all, most affiliate programs, such as MyAffiliateProgram.com, will track your traffic as well as sales, which will give you your conversion rate.

How does it work? Simply set up a new "affiliate" for each keyword you purchase through the pay engines.

For example, you would create a short URL that you would list with Overture. That URL would be nothing more than a redirect page that redirects to the affiliate link you've assigned for the keyword.

For example:

...would only be a redirect page that takes your visitors to

...which is the real page of content. Affiliate ID #1925 would be set up specifically to track traffic for the keyword phrase, english bulldog puppies, that you've purchased through Overture. You wouldn't send any other traffic through that page, and you would list the puppies.html page at Overture’s Managed Listing Section of the DirecTraffic Center.

Other Benefits of Tracking Click Data

Though each of the pay engines do everything they can to prevent click fraud, it does happen. By setting up a tracking system to track click data and monitoring the click patterns carefully, you'll be able to spot any possible click fraud and can report it immediately to the pay engine.

Helpful Software Programs and Services

Keyword Tool: KeywordTool's tracking service tracks the conversion or sales performance of keywords on search and pay-per-click engines, showing which keyword phrases are actually converting into customers and from which search engines. It is not a visitor tracker; instead, it determines keyword performance. (http://www.keywordtool.net/)

GO TOAST: One of GO TOAST’s components, ProfitBuilder, is a ROI service for any advertising campaign. GO TOAST is an Overture approved bid management service. (http://www.gotoast.com/)

WebTrends Reporting Center’s Enterprise Edition: Besides basic log analysis, the Enterprise Edition will track users through your web site in order to pinpoint visitor behavior through critical processes, such as checkout and registration. It will also analyze marketing campaigns by determining how much revenue each campaign is generating. (http://www.netiq.com/products/wrc/enterprise.asp)

Overture has an ROI Calculator and a CPM Calculator that will help measure your return on investment: (http://www.overture.com/d/USm/adcenter/tools/index.jhtml)

Final thoughts...

You'd be amazed at the number of people who set up keyword campaigns but have no idea whether or not the campaigns are making them money because they don't have tracking systems in place. So, regardless of whether you are just beginning or even if you've been purchasing keywords for a while, be sure to set up tracking for keywords and user sessions. Doing so will enable you to know for certain which keywords are working. And, that's the best way to maximize the return on your keyword investments.

Guide to Traffic Exchanges

Learn how to use and get the most out of Traffic Exchanges. These article is free to use on your site or newsletters.

Introduction

In order for your online business to succeed in making any money, you must find a way to get people to it. It’s very easy to get people to see your website using Traffic Exchanges. Traffic Exchanges are a good way to promote your online business or website. You do not have to worry about receiving complaints of spam either.

How they Work

The way Traffic Exchanges work are very simple. When you first visit a Traffic Exchange website, you will be asked to register. Usually when you register you receive free credits just for signing up. You might be asked to confirm that the email you registered with is valid. When you login for the first time, you should add your sites into the exchange.

Types of Exchanges

There are many different types of exchanges. The most common of which are Auto Exchange, Surf Exchange, and Start Exchange. The one you should use depends on the type of traffic you desire. If you’re just looking for hits, then an Auto Exchange is the way to go. On the other hand, if you want to attract leads or registrations, then you should consider using a Start Exchange or Surf Exchange.

Auto Exchange

An Auto Exchange rotates your site with an automatic timer. The traffic quality of this type of exchanges is very low, but is also cheaper and easier to earn credits. You do not have to click your fingers off to earn traffic credits. When choosing any Traffic Exchange, make sure there are anti-cheat functions available. You do not want to waste your time with exchanges that are not going to improve your quality of traffic.

Surf Exchange

A Surf Exchange works by members logging into their account and opening a surf window. The surf window contains a timer and when the timer reaches zero, you are then told to click to continue. Many sites use anti-cheat protection to prevent automated programs from surfing for them. The traffic quality of this type of exchange is usually pretty good, but is also more time consuming and you get tired of clicking quickly.

Start Exchange

Start Exchanges work by setting your default homepage to a specific web address that makes it possible for you to earn credits for your site just by starting your web browser. This type of exchange usually gives good traffic because visitors are actually looking at your site.

Rules

Many Traffic Exchanges set rules on what types of sites can join. The most common rules are that your site can only have a certain number of pop ups, if any. If your site contains adult content, you should consider looking for an adult traffic exchange as the regular exchanges usually forbid this type of content. Illegal content such as pirated software and child pornography is not allowed by all exchanges.

Downline

Many sites offer a referral program so you can earn credits for each person you refer to the traffic exchange. You can add a banner, button, and text links to your site to add members to your downline. Also, you could add your referral link to other exchanges to help build your downline.

Targeted Advertising

Some Traffic Exchanges allow you to target your site to visitors with a specific interest. It is a good idea to try these ones first so you can test the market for your product or service.

Buying Credits

Many Traffic Exchanges let members buy credits. Many of them let you pay them via online payment services such as PayPal and E-Gold. Shop around before buying credits, you might be able to find cheaper rates at another Traffic Exchange.

Safe lists

Safe lists are another way to exchange traffic. You subscribe to a list and agree to receive offers via email from other members. There are premium users and free users. Free users are able to send one email to a limited number of subscribers every few days. Premium users get even more benefits such as being able to send email to the entire list. A great thing about safe lists is that you will not be accused to sending spam.

ONE MILLION hits within 3 months..... without using Search Engines.

TRAFFIC Generation....

It's one thing to have a web site.

It's another thing to get (qualified) traffic to it.

About 8 years ago I attended a seminar on this new thing called "The Internet." The guys who ran the seminar told us a lot of stuff, but there's one thing they said that has always stayed in my head.

They said the NET was about to change the marketing paradigm.

You see, previously marketing had solely been about "difference." An example. My product is bigger and bluer

than yours. Buy it!

The guys who ran this seminar said the NET was different. It was about "sharing." "The more you share the more you gain." How right they were !!

INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH...

This was the original vision of the Internet... "sharing"

AND...

now let's get back to the topic of TRAFFIC generation.

SEARCH ENGINES are about competition... "difference."

If you're not on the first 3 pages of a search engine search, forget it. You're effectively lost in the techno netherworld... never to be heard of again.

So, you can do one of two things.

1. Bust your butt and your wallet trying to get top positioning with the ever-changing SE's search criteria mathematics OR...

2. FIND A BETTER WAY... through sharing.

Question? "Why do people search the Internet?"

Answer: "They're looking for information OR... a solution to a problem."

So, if you'd exchanged links with 1,000's of other ON-TOPIC, quality related sites would you get more traffic?

Yes, you would!! Think of the math.

One thousand sites sending you (say, only) 3 visitors a day would result in !!! Hmmmmm

And, here's the kicker. Search Engines are increasingly rating a site's popularity by the number of ON-TOPIC links it's got to it.

So, get your linking strategy right and the double whammie here is that your popularity rises in the search engines

"without you doing a damned thing."

Of course if you were to do all this manually we'd still be having this conversation next century. "Get the little robots to do the work I say, and in this case it's called ZEUS."

NOW... [caution] This is a not some smoke and mirrors technique. It requires knowledge, a little expense and

effort... but it works.

AND, if you truly want to ramp up the action then get yourself a mentor.

Glenn Canady got over ONE MILLION hits in 3 MONTHS using this wonderful robot with its effective linking strategy.

This traffic is FREE and PERMANENT... and it only continues to increase.

Glenn got so excited about his results that he wrote a book about it, explaining how it's all done.

How To Work With Free Traffic Generators

Free traffic?!! Wow! That just sends goose bumps down my spine!

We are all looking for free web site traffic. Search engines are the best sources but you must constantly optimize for top indexing. There are however other sources of free traffic. Making good use of them takes a bit of patience and care.

One of growing popularity, traffic exchanges supply visitors to your site in exchange for traffic which you deliver to the network of sites. These systems allow you to accumulate credits which are then converted in to a predetermined number of viewings of your site either in the form of a link or an actual web page. The following lists some of the most popular systems.

(1) Traffic Exchanges - TrafficSwarm is owned by SixDegrees Media in Sausalito, California, and driven in large part by CEO Wayne Van Dyck, an ex-Wall Street Investment Banker. It is by and far the most well-run and beneficial traffic exchange that I have found to date. You can check it out at (http://www.trafficswarm.com/cgi-bin/swarm.cgi?224700).

Traffic exchanges work by crediting per the amount of traffic you bring to other sites on the network. This can be through your own surfing, referral traffic, or even by purchasing site visits. Most exchanges offer free and paid memberships, with paid members of course obtaining more perks and potentially more targeted traffic.

(2) Banner Exchanges - Banners are known not to have the largest click through rates but can still be of benefit. They typically make use of a 2:1 or lower visibility ratio, meaning that for every 2 times someone views a banner on your site, 1 view of your banner will be shown elsewhere on the network.

The most important aspect is to make your banner highly targeted and not general. Moreover, make sure the exchange program will target your banner topic to sites that attract visitors within your target market. Otherwise your efforts will not prove fruitful. You may have traffic but not from people interested in what you offer. Banners GoMLM is one of the more popular exchanges. I personally use (http://www.superbannertraffic.com) and have had modest success.

(3) Reciprocal Linking - Trading links with other web masters can generate traffic from both the individual site and through better search engine ranking. The later takes time and cannot be rushed. The SE has to crawl a site in order to locate the reciprocal link before the index is updated.

Above all else, you must be diligent, patient, and track what methods work. You must put in the time and care to learn about and tailor them to your particular purpose. If you prefer to dish out the bucks for traffic there are numerous fee-based systems. Pay-per-click is the most popular and can deliver highly targeted visits to your site. Although, whether you benefit or not from the visit, your money is already spent.

Secrets to Free Web-site Traffic

You have just uploaded your web-site and it looks great! You feel good about it and you're ready to make some money! There's only one problem, you need some Customers, or Traffic! There are a few ways to do this, that are free, but will take some time and work.

First you will need to set-up some link pages on you web-site. Then you will need to exchange links with other web-sites that are related to yours. For example, if you have a home business you can visit Google and type in "home business". Google will then give you a few million related sites that you can start with. You will then visit these sites exchanging links. Most sites will have a "link to us" or "Add URL" page. You will click that link and follow the instructions to submit a link back to your web-site. It is good to start with at least a hundred links or more, (no more than 50 links a page). Exchange links with the first and second pages only, then you will want to type in maybe, "work from home", "best business ideas", "home careers", "computer jobs", etc. Repeat this procedure until you have enough. Sites on the first two pages of the Google search will have the most traffic, which will increase yours.

The next thing you will want to do is write an article. Writing articles is a great way to market your web-site and increase your traffic. Write a simple article relating to your web-site topic, if you need some help, visit Google and type in the subject your looking for. At the end of your article you will create an author bio or resource box. In it include a brief description of you and your web-site and your web-site URL.This allows everyone who reads your article to learn more about you and your business. Now you will start submitting your article to many article directories by visiting Google and search for "article directories". By doing this your article will be posted all over the world for people to read, thus creating more traffic for your site.

Last, you can create your own newsletter. This is more of a long-term strategy, but one that you should start early so that you can get the effects as soon as possible. Everyone that signs-up, 20% may return to your site from the links in your newsletter. This will build over a period of time and add lots of free traffic. A valid newsletter may consist of a single article about the subject of your site, followed by information telling them how to unsubscribe or subscribe. If you don't have time to write your own article, there are many on the Internet with permission to reprint included, just remember to include the author's bio or resource box at the end. To find these articles, go to Google and type: ?????? articles reprint. Just fill in the ?????? with your website topic.

Now you will start submitting your newsletter (ezine) to many ezine directories by visiting Google and search for "ezine directories". This will help you establish links to your ezine and create more subscribers for your newsletter, thus creating another source of free traffic.

Using these highly effective ways to increase traffic to your web-site will help you market your business and reach a larger consumer base.

"AdWords + ClickBank" Breaks PROFIT Records

The latest trend in online marketig today is running Google AdWords campaigns to market ClickBank products. This article explains everything in layman style, so if you are familiar with some concept, please skip that section. Make sure you save this valuable article to refer later.

What are AdWords? Can you picture the small rectangular boxes that appear next to Google search results? If you cannot, goto Google now and make a search to find out related advertisements to that particular search in small boxes next to the search results. These are called AdWords. Goto (http://adwords.google.com) to get an idea about this, before you read the rest of this article.

What is ClickBank? It's one of the major eBook and Software companies in the market today and known to pay very high commission rates to its affiliates. With their huge catalog, it's not difficult to search a product to suit any target market, and the average profit you can make per item sold is around $10 mark. They pay you bi-weekly with a minimum payout of $10, to any country in the world. Which simply means, if you can search and recommend a product to some of your friends by email with a special link ClickBank gives you, and if only one person buys, you can get a paycheck addressed to your home. If you don't have an account with them, get one for free and browse the site to get an idea. Goto (http://zzz.clickbank.net/r/?hfahadh)

Why ClickBank and AdWords? ClickBank products are easily sellable and AdWords gives you the chance to meet a target market. Whats the difference between targeted and untargeted markets? If there are 100 click throughs to a motor parts website and if the visitors are sent in from a Humor site, the sales ratio would be much lesser compared to a visiotor stream from a Vehicle site. More related the product to the visitor is, a better sales ratio you can expect. Highly targeted market means there is a very close relationship between the user's interests and the product.

Google AdWords can give you a very cost effective way to reach highly targeted markets. Your ads have a great exposure, as they will also be shown on Google partner search engines and in many websites, while making sure that the ad will only be shown to targeted visitors. You will only pay for the clicks, not the impressions - you don't pay for showing your ad. As an example, if you pay $0.20 per visitor and if it takes 20 visitors per sale (since it's highly targeted traffic), and if you average profit is $10 per item, you spend 20 * $0.20 = $4 dollars per sale to make a $10 profit. A very good return on investment.

The results can be so much better or can be the worst, depending on how you manage the campaigns. If you have a great knowledge on how google AdWords works, optimizing techniques, how to manage your budget and how to keep the costs low while maintaining a good click through ratio (thus in turn the sales ratio).

This is a whole new business and comes with an initial investment with an operating cost while gaining a very good profit in return. The investment is really low, considering an investment for an offline business, and even the break even time is much smaller, while the profit is very good.

Your full investment is shown below.

1. Account at ClickBankFree

2. Account at AdWordsFree

3. AdWords Activation$5

4. AdWords Initial Budget$50 (Payable later)

5. A Good Book on AdWords$50 (Variable)

** NOTE: You must refer a good AdWords report / guide before spending a penny on it, since it can be extremely successful if operated properly or can be disastrous otherwise. The price can vary, but an average estimation is shown.

** AdWords Initial Budget is not payable right now and it is not a set amount. You may use AdWords after activating for $5 and may set your campaigns to any budget you wish, even for $10. We reserved $50 so you can get a decent return on investment initially, which will motivate you to carry the business on. It's payable only at the end of the month. If you did the things right, you may pay these operating costs off after you get the profits every month.

So your initial investment is, $50 for the book

and after you buy, $5 for AdWords activation

for a TOTAL of just $55 to start a BIG BUSINESS.

This isn't a get rich quick scheme or an illegal money making program, but a big business, which can be very profitable if managed successfully and can be a real waste of money if it goes wrong, as the case with any other business. But the advantage is, that the initial investment for this is really low, can expect a very good return on investment, can become an established business quickly and no great risk.

I highly recommend you to read a very good book on AdWords even before you activate the AdWords account, so you can make every penny count. There are many great books on this subject, but the best one I found is located at (http://fzgoogle.cjb.net), which is good for its price and is very informative.

In summary, the steps needed to establish this business is as follows:

1. Open an account at ClickBank (http://zzz.clickbank.net/r/?hfahadh)

2. Open an account at AdWords (http://adwords.google.com)

3. Buy a good book on AdWords (http://fzgoogle.cjb.net)

* Then you need to start advertising campaigns with Google. Your AdWords reference book should contain everything you need to know, optimization tips, etc. and you should be able to start and manage campaigns like a pro.

4. Activate the account

5. Get the paychecks

6. Pay for advertising in AdWords (operating cost)

This is all you need to do to get your business started and rolling along.

My final piece of advice is, plan all your expenses and expected minimum return on investment out. This will keep you to your budget and is the most essential to succeed as an online marketer. Spend less, less and less, BUT earn more, more and more..

20 Handy Hints on getting a better search engine ranking within Google

The list below shows 20 handy hints we provide to assist our client's websites rank better within Google (and the other major search engines!)

1. Make sure that each page has a different title

The title of each page is very important to good search engine ranking. It should be about 60 - 70 characters long and describe the content of the page. It is not necessary to include the name of the website within the title of the page. The title is shown in search results and should therefore be used to entice visitor to click the link to your site.

2. Ensure that each page has a different and informative description

The meta-description is also important to good search engine ranking. This should be about 140 characters long, describing the contents of the page and be easy to read.

3. Don't overstuff your keywords meta tag with too many keywords

The keywords meta tag are ignored by many search engines. Use for common misspellings of words on the page.

4. Make sure that your webpages validate at the w3c website

Ensure that you include a DOCTYPE declaration.

5. Make sure that each page in your site has interesting content

This will ensure that other sites want to link to your site. The best way to get links to your site is through 'genuine' recommendations in the form of links from other related and reputable sites.

6. Don't use a splash page for your site

Splash pages may look good, but can act as a barrier to both visitors and search engines.

7. Avoid using Javascript menus which search engines aren't able to crawl

Although some menus can look great, there is a possibility that you may be preventing search engines and some visitors from accessing the pages linked from the menu.

8. Make sure you don't place valuable content in images

All your valuable content should be textual and not presented in images, Flash movies, animated gifs, etc.

9. Make sure that if your site is dynamically generated, that you are not using too many URL parameters (3 maximum)

Google will pick up page with more than 3 URL parameters, but some of those pages may end up as 'supplementary results' (these are second class results). Ensure that you don't pass session IDs (or anything that may look like a session ID) in URLs.

10. Don't use bulk search engine submission programmes or services

Although still marketed widely, bulk submission programmes are worthless. It is a much better use of time finding related and reputable sites to get links from.

11. Don't use unnecessary meta tags (e.g. author, copyright, classification etc)

These simply add to the size of your pages and don't have any beneficial effect. The most important tags for search engine ranking are title tag and the description meta tag.

12. Don't prevent search engines from visiting your site when they want to by excluding them with the robots tag

By all means, use the robots.txt file to restrict search engines from 'private' areas of your site, but make sure that you are not also preventing them from accessing your prime content as and when they want to.

13. Try not to use deprecated markup such as font tags

By using CSS you make your site more future-proof, accessible from more browsers and also (potentially) more search engine friendly.

14. Try to use CSS instead of HTML and tables for styling

By separating styling from content using CSS, you reduce the complexity of each of your website's pages and make site wide changes easier. Also, this helps increase the content to HTML ratio, thereby possibly helping with search engine ranking.

15. Reference an included JavaScript file rather than using it within your HTML

Many pages on the web are littered with JavaScript. This saves bloat and makes maintenance easier. Move all JS to a separately referenced .JS file instead.

16. Make sure that you target keywords and phrases that are likely to be used by your target visitors

Avoid using industry buzzwords if you are promoting B2C products and services.

17. Include a sitemap to provide easy access to the main pages within your site

Try to keep the number of links on each page at no more than 50 - 100. Use multiple pages if required. Structure the site map for human visitors not just search engines.

18. Make sure that you include alt-text (alternative text) for all images on your site

Alt-text are the little yellow popups that are shown when you hover a mouse over the images on your site. These will benefit visitors with disabilities as well as providing a small SEO benefit.

19. Don't get hung-up on PageRank

Page Rank is just one measure of the importance of a page, not the only one!

20. Write for human visitors not search engines

It is often very easy to try to optimise for search engines and forget that the content within your site needs to be read by humans. Make sure that pages are well structured using headings, paragraphs, bold, italics, bullet points (all using CSS). Break long pages into a number of smaller pages. About 400 - 600 characters for each page is enough.

Quick notes...

■Google focuses more on inbound links and the quality of those links than some other search engines. Read our guidelines on link building for improved search engine ranking.

■Yahoo tends to focuses more on 'on-the-page' factors

■When writing link text (anchor text), try to avoid using the 'targeted phrase' exactly. Instead, reword using variants of the 'targeted phrase'.

■Try to get links into interior pages of your site.

■Avoid getting links into your site from every page of another site (site-wide links

Message Boards
Message boards (a.k.a. bulletin boards or forums) like the one on this site add interactivity to a website and are a great way to generate traffic. Visitors contribute to the content of your site every time they post on the board. Depending on well you design, promote, and maintain your board, it may become the most lively and highest traffic section on your site, allowing you to generate income by placing ads on it.

phpBB Bulletin Board
This site uses phpBB, a high powered, fully scalable, and customizable open-source bulletin board package. Featuring a user-friendly interface, simple administration panel, and extensive documentation, phpBB is the ideal free community solution for all web sites. You'll need a server or hosting plan that supports PHP and one of the following databases: MySQL, MS-SQL, PostgreSQL or Access/ODBC.

vBulletin Forum Software
If you going with a free bulletin board system like phpBB, you're pretty much on your own when it comes to installing the software and making sure it runs properly. Your board will contain an advertising banner near the top of the page, which isn't bad considering all the features that they give you.

Ad Rotatorss

If you're planning to sell advertising space on your website, you'll probably want some type of ad rotator. An ad rotator displays a different ad every time a page is loaded. This allows you to build an inventory of ads (banners, text boxes, etc.) and display all of them (in succession) on a page without having to manually edit the html codes. Rotating ads also enhances their click-through rates since visitors don't have to stare at the same ad over and over again every time they visit a certain page on your site.

phpAdsNew - Our favorite is phpAdsNew, a free open-source ad server, with an integrated banner management interface and tracking system for gathering statistics. With phpAdsNew you can easily rotate paid banners as well as your own banners. You can even integrate banners from third-party advertising companies. phpAdsNew can handle regular banners and buttons, pop-ups, text ads, DHTML banners, flash banners, and much more. Even though, phpAdsNew is free, we strongly recommend that you donate to the phpAdsNew team to reward their effort and support their continuing work on the project.

Mass Search Engine Submission

Although we suggest that you submit your site to the major search engines manually, you may wish to to use an automatic submission tool (see Free Web Tools) or paid service to submit to the many smaller search engines and directories.

Web Launch URL Submission Service - Submit your site to top 34 search engines for FREE. There is no obligation whatsoever for this free service (however, we appreciate your linking to us if you find this service useful). If you need more exposure, we can submit your site to over 300 search engines for just $4.95.

After Submitting

After submitting your site to the search engines, check them periodically to make sure that it's listed. Your site may not appear in the search results because the crawler has not gotten to it, yet. Resubmit if you wish. Resubmitting a site that has been submitted already won't help your site get listed faster, but it won't hurt, either. If your site is listed but is poorly ranked in the search results, check its html to make sure it's properly optimized for the keywords that you are targeting. Even well-optimized, content-rich sites may not get ranked highly at first because of poor link popularity. In that case, keep promoting it the word gets around.

Speaking of link popularity, we would greatly appreciate your linking to this site if you find it useful. Just copy and paste the follow code into your html:

Website Promotion - Increase Your Site Traffic.

You have created a brilliant website and now it's time to get some traffic. This small five step guide can give you some help on how to succeed with website promotion.
1. Submit your site to search engines.
2. Submit your site to different directories.
3. Submit your site to pay-per-click search engines
4. Exchange links with other sites.
5. Join a traffic exchange program.

1. Submit your site to search engines.

This is a "must do". Before you submit your site to the engines make sure that your site is search engine optimized. After that, consider submitting your site to search engines for free, using our automatic service, or do it by hand.

.2. Submit your site to different directories.

Submitting your site to directories does not only give you more hits, it also increases your link popularity. The number of web pages linking to your site is considered an important factor by many search engines to achieve a high ranking. A link from an important site such as Yahoo is given more weight than any other link.

Submitting to directories are not as easy as submitting to search engines. You have to make sure that there are no dead links or "under construction pages" on your site. They do not accept such sites. Read more about how to add your site on their information pages below.

3. Submit your site to pay-per-click-search engines.

If you are in a hurry to get your site noticed, or if you have money to spend on advertising, pay-per-click search engines offers a perfect solution.
You pick the keywords suitable for your site, the ones you need to attract the right type of visitors to your site. Then you set a rate that you are willing to pay for each click on the keywords that you have selected. The search results are ordered after the highest bid on the searched keyword and as an advertiser you only need to pay if the searcher clicks on your link. This way, you only pay for the visitors that you actually receive.

There are dozens of pay-per-click search engines on the Internet and some can bring you a lot of traffic and some will probably not be that good. The pay-per-click search engine with most searches is without question Yahoo! Search Marketing. They provide search results at several major search engines including Yahoo!, Ebay, Alltheweb, Infospace, AltaVista, and many others.

Other major pay-per-click search engines:

4. Exchange links with other sites.
As mentioned before, link popularity is considered an important factor by many search engines to achieve a high ranking ,so you would want your link on as many other sites as possible. Links from sites related to yours are also given more weight by the search engines so you should try to get your link on such sites.

People move from one site to another through links. A well placed link on a site that attracts the same visitors as yours can be a great traffic generator. If you want to find sites to exchange links with, check out who's linking to your competitors and try to exchange links with them. Keep in mind that a link exchange should be beneficial for both parts.

5. Join a traffic exchange program.

Traffic exchanges gives you an opportunity to advertise for free on other sites. There are many different types of traffic exchanges such as banner, text link, exit, popunder and popup exchanges.

When selecting a traffic exchange make sure that they offer extensive fraud control and targeted categories otherwise it will most likely just end up as a waste of your time. Fraud control is important cause sometimes members of the exchanges are using automated bots to receive free traffic from other members in the exchange. Meaning that you will send them real visitors and they will send you robot visits. Targeted categories is a must, and the more targeted, the better, cause these are the visitors that are most likely to be interested in your website.

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization Tips

There is one important thing you need to know. Meta tags alone does not give you a high ranking in the search engines listings. What you need is to combine your meta tags, titles and your content. You can have the best of keywords in your tags but you will probably not get a top listing as long as they are not present on your page.

Most of the major search engines index every word of your page and compare them to your title META description and META keywords. In fact some engines probably don't use the META keywords anymore, so that is why content is becoming even more important.

The first step in web site promotion is to identify the words people are most likely to use in a search for your site. After identifying about 5 to 10 words, write them up as your keywords and optimize the page using them. From now on these are the words you should use in your Title, META description, META keywords list, throughout your page and the ALT tags when using images.

Keep in mind that excessive repeating of META keywords could be considered as spamming by some searchengines and you might get penalized with a lower ranking for that practice. You should also mix your keywords in different combinations throughout the page and in your ALT tags instead of using the same phrase over and over again. Also remember to put your most important keywords as close to the BODY tag as you can.

One of the most important factors to achieve a high ranking in the search engines is link popularity. It's not only the number of links to your web site that is important it's also the quality of the links that are important. A link at Dmoz or Yahoo is usually given much more weight than a link from a personal web site. Some engines are also very found of "on topic" links. Links from sites that are focusing on the same topic as your site, are known as "on topic" links. An "on topic" link is also a link that contains your keywords, in this case an "on topic" link could look like this:

AddPro - Site Promotion and URL Submission

There are four important keywords present in this link. Some search engines will boost your ranking for keywords that are present in links to your site. It is also important that your keywords are present in internal links, because some engines count them as well.

Another important factor to consider is the use of misspelled words: Misspelled words could boost your traffic because many people are likely to misspell your keywords in a search. In a search for a site submission service, people could search for free search engine submisison, sumit, subit, search egnine submission, submition, add ULR, saerchengines, etc. and end up at this page because these words are present at the page and among the META keywords.

The Title is the most important place to put your keywords, but be careful and limit the Title to fewer than 15 words including your top keywords. It's important that your Title is as descriptive as possible and that it focus on what your page is all about, for two obvious reasons.

1. This is the title that will come up in a search, and you would want to attract people, not scare them away with a lot of keywords that makes no sense. Also, if a surfer clicks on your link and the Title differs from your content he's likely to leave the site.

2. Your Title should reflect the content of your page for better ranking in the search engines. It makes your site "relevant" to your Title.

Example: titleAddPro.com - Free Website Promotion and URL Submission to Search Engines.title

The META description is used by some searchengines as a summary of what your website is about. Put your keywords and key phrases here and make sure that they are present on the page as well. You should not use more than 200 characters in your META description.

Example: meta name="description" content="Your site description here."

META keywords are not used as frequently by the searchengines as they used to be, but there is no reason not to use them. Use no more than 1000 characters and separate each keyword or key phrases with a comma. Remember that each of your keywords should also be present at your page for higher ranking, and to avoid being caught for spamming.

Example: meta name = "keywords" content = "Keyword1, Keyword2, Key phrase, etc."

To simplify the process of making META tags use our META Tag Generator and cut and paste the results in the source code of your pages. Remember that all tags (Title, Meta description and Meta keywords) are placed between head and head in your document.

There are many more ways of getting visitors to your site. To learn more about how to increase your website traffic we advise you to read our small guide on Website Promotion.

Free website promotion tutorial

Welcome to A Promotion Guide. If this is your first visit, you might want to take the time to read through this page. It contains a free step-by-step website promotion tutorial
that also serves as a "User's Guide" to the site. Reading it will give you a good idea on what you need to do, when you need to do it and how the articles on this site will help you.

This tutorial is split into three phases that each have two, three or four steps. It is highly recommended that you start from the first phase and move forwards only after you have completed all of the steps in it.

We'll begin with the assumption that your site is brand new and that you haven't done any website promotion work yet. However, that doesn't mean that you can't use the tutorial if you have submitted to a few search engines or registered your site with a couple of directories. If you notice that there are some things you have already done, feel free to simply skip over them.

Promoting your site takes a lot of time and may involve waiting several weeks or even months to get into certain directories and search engines. Thus, it might be wise to bookmark this page so that you can return to it later and continue the tutorial from where you left off.

Website promotion, phase one - Directories
You should start your website promotion efforts by listing your site at the most popular Internet directories. Because they can send you substantial amounts of traffic and affect your ranking in various search engines, it is wise to make sure that your site is present in all of the major directories before doing anything else.

Step one - General information
Submitting to directories is easy and doesn't require much effort. It's ensuring that your submission will be accepted that makes this task a hard one.

First, read "Boost your traffic with website directories" to get a basic idea on what directories are and how to submit to them.

Examine the article about web page design to get some tips on how to improve your site and reduce the chances of it being rejected.

Step two - The Open Directory Project
Start with the Open Directory Project. While your site has to offer good, unique content to be accepted to the ODP, its editors usually review sites quickly and won't reject them without a good reason for doing so. This, along with the fact that submitting to the ODP is free of charge, makes it a perfect starting point. Completing this step successfully will also provide you with experience that will prove to be very valuable later on.

Read my thoughts on how Google's ranking algorithm works and notice how an ODP listing seems to affect your ranking at Google. Keep this information in mind when you submit.

Take a look at the advice on submitting your website to the ODP.

Finally, submit your site to the ODP.

If your submission isn't successful, consider becoming an editor at the Open Directory and listing your own site.

Step three - Yahoo
After securing a listing at ODP, your next task is to get the folks at Yahoo to notice that your site exists and is worth a place in their directory. This might cost you a fair amount of money if you are running a commercial site, but is usually worth it. Non-commercial sites can get in for free, but might require several submissions and a lot of patience before they are accepted.

Check out the Yahoo-specific guidelines and hints and the article about how Yahoo's search feature ranks sites.

Bite the bullet and submit your site to Yahoo.

Website promotion, phase two - Search engines
Now that your site has been included in ODP and Yahoo, you should already be receiving clearly more traffic than before. The next task is to get to know search engines and use them to bring even more people to your pages. Because you have completed phase one, you have established a good foundation for making your site perform well in the search engines.

Step one - Search engine optimization, basics
In order to gain good rankings, you'll need to learn the basics of search engine algorithms (ranking systems) and adjust your pages to meet their criteria as well as possible. This will take some time and effort, but doing some work now will save you from a lot of trouble in the future.

First, try to make the design of your site as search engine friendly as possible. To read more about the subject, take a look at my article about website optimization.

Next, you'll need to do some keyword optimization. Sounds frightening, but in plain English it simply means choosing the correct keywords for your pages. Using the wrong words is perhaps the most common reason why people don't get satisfying results from their search engine optimization work.

Continue by reading these search engine optimization tips.

Read the article about META tags and add them to all of your pages. The META keywords tag isn't absolutely necessary, but the META description tag is very important.

Learn what link popularity is and how search engines use it to rank your pages.

Unless you have already done so, read about Google's algorithm. Google is among the most popular search services of today, so it is wise to take its requirements into account.

Use all of this information to optimize your pages for the search engines.

Step two - Search engine optimization, advanced
Your site is now adequately prepared to really start bringing in traffic from search engines. But if you want to widen your knowledge about them and increase your chances of success, you still have some work to do. On the other hand, if you're totally exhausted and just want to get this thing over with, you'll be delighted to know that this step isn't absolutely necessary.

Study some of the more advanced things related to search engine optimization. Among them are cloaking, css tricks, doorway pages, themes and how to improve your search engine ranking with click popularity.

Read about the things you should avoid doing from this article that outlines common web site promotion mistakes.

Step three - Submitting to search engines?
Now is the time to make sure that your site has a presence in the indexes of major search engines. Fortunately, they are quite good at finding your site on their own. There are things you can do to help them, though..

Get to know how search engine submission works and how the search engines determine which sites to list.

Read the article "Targeting your search engine marketing" to see which engines are the most popular ones.

If you are running a commercial site, you might also want to consider paying for search engine placement. Take a look at how you can use PPC search engine advertising to buy your way to the top.

Website promotion, phase three - More techniques
After being accepted into the largest directories and having pages of your site come up in answer to searches done at the major search engines, the long hours that you've spent on website promotion have begun to pay off and your daily visitor count is starting to look good. But there is still plenty you can do to help your site attract even more traffic.

In phase three, we'll examine different promotion methods that you might want to try. However, in order to prevent you from wasting your time on things that don't work, we'll also go over a few techniques that have proven to be less than spectacular when I experimented with them.

Step one - Keep these in mind
First, let's take a look at the good stuff. The articles introduced in this step are about the website promotion methods that are at least partially effective. Some of them work better than others, but if used correctly, all of them can produce results that will be worth your while. Of course, most of the articles include advice on what you need to do to obtain the best possible results with the method discussed.

If you sell something on your site, you might want to try banner ads. Usually banner campaigns are seen as expensive and ineffective, but it is partially because advertisers don't know how to design good banners.

Read the article on how to increase traffic with return visitors. Getting people to come back is the secret to why some sites get amazingly many hits per day.

Learn what reciprocal links are and how to get them, then put that knowledge into use. In addition to sending you visitors, reciprocal links will also increase your link popularity and help your site rank higher in the search engines.

Start using E-mail signatures. They might not produce thousands of visitors, but are a great way to promote your site a bit without having to actually do anything.

Evaluate whether your site could benefit from joining a topsite list. These lists have their good and bad sides, but might be at least worth a try.

Consider trying to build traffic with Usenet advertising. It can give you a nice traffic boost and help spread the word about your site, but only if done properly. Read the article to learn why Usenet promotion should only be done with great care.

Writing newsletter articles often works well and can send you large amounts of targeted traffic in a short period of time, for free.

Step two - Forget these
As said, everything just doesn't always work the way it should in the world of promotion. In step two, our attention is focused on website promotion methods that are more trouble than they are worth. They might not be entirely useless, but your time would be better spent on improving your site or spreading the word about your site in other ways.

Click exchange programs are easy, fast, free and will get you a lot of visitors. That's why it might be a surprise to hear that they really aren't good website promotion tools.

A lot has been written about FFA pages and for the past few years, most of it has been negative. The only thing they are good for is increasing the flow of spam to your E-mail address.

Winning website awards can occasionally be useful, especially if the awards are well-known. However, sometimes the winner of the award is not the real winner.

Final words
Congratulate yourself for being persistent, bright and hard-working. Most get frustrated and quit before this point, which is why most sites never become anything. After all, the secret to having a successful site is working hard in both promoting
and creating it. You just might have what it takes.

After going through those three phases, you've read just about everything this site has to offer. While there is more to website promotion than what we have discussed here, you now know quite a lot about the subject. If you still desire more information, don't forget to come back to this site every now and then. This tutorial is always incomplete, because I continuously notice things that I want to write about.

I hope that A Promotion Guide has been able to help you to make your site more popular and thus given you the chance to spread your ideas and thoughts to a larger audience. And remember, if you have achieved good results, it's not because I showed you how to do it - it's because you did it.

Keyword Density SEO Tool analyzes ALL the words on the page and suggests keyword phrases that are already heavily embedded in the content of the file. From there, you can use Keyword Density SEO Tool's "top keywords" tool to scan the major search engines for the phrases the heavy hitters are using. You will also see words that don't work and why!

Keyword analyzers don't account for word proximity, or phrases.
When a certain phrase appears more than once, Keyword Density SEO Tool then calculates the "Keyword Density" of that phrase. The keyword density is the ratio of the phrase to the total number of words, adjusting for the number of words in the phrase. This way, you are analyzing both the keyword density and the proximity of keywords at the same time.

Some search engine opimization programs only do part of the job.

Keyword Density SEO Tool scores your page based on several Search Engine Optimization techniques. In addition to keyword density calculations, it verifies that your site is not overloaded and that it has the correct distribution of profitable keywords in the most critical locations.

Keyword Density SEO Tool Scores Pages Differently

There is a pervading myth that by inserting words you think are relevant to your site in your keywords meta tag, you will automatically improve your search engine ranking. The truth is that only a select few search algorithms utilize the keyword meta tag. Keyword Density SEO Tool calculates relevant keyword phrases by analyzing ALL of the words on the page, not just the meta tags.

Keyword Density SEO Tool factors phrases, not just keywords.

SEO professionals suggest an average of 3% - 7% keyword density for relevant phrases; however, recent changes in Google's algorithm may challenge this belief. Our system accounts for a number of different criteria, not just density, so words that aren't as prevalent might still score as "optimum" if they are placed correctly.

Conversely, if the keyword density is too high (above 10%), it may appear to be artificially "stuffed," and may be penalized as spam by the search engine. Keyword Density SEO Tool warns you about words that may occur too frequently to be helpful.

Generally, a well written page will have its own prevalent keyword phrases. Keyword Density SEO Tool helps you identify them.

Keyword Density SEO Tool lets you set these thresholds yourself to fine tune for your own optimization goals. With this system, web developers get the benefit of keyword density scoring, while also tapping into the value of correct keyword placement.

Note: Keywords scoring "Optimal" by Keyword Density SEO Tool when weighed against the whole site are your best bets for success.

Boost your website with websites directories

Directories are places where users go to find websites, just like they do with search engines. However, there are significant differences between
the two. For people who are trying to boost the traffic to their sites, it is vital to understand these differences in order to succeed.

While search engines normally accept almost any site or page that is submitted to them without looking at its quality, directories usually only accept sites that offer quality information. Because all sites submitted to directories are reviewed by humans, sites that are of low quality rarely get accepted.

This leads us to a logical conclusion: Before submitting your site to any directories, make sure that your site is completely ready for it! I strongly recommend that you read the "Web page design" section of this site for more information on how to prepare your site for the submission. Remember that directories list sites, not pages. In normal circumstances, you should only submit the front page of your site to directories.

Which directories can really boost your traffic?
If you did what I suggested above, your site should now be ready to be submitted to different directories. But how does this happen? Well, first you'll of course have to pick the directories you're going to submit to. The most important ones your site should get into are Yahoo and DMOZ, also known as Open Directory. You can, and should, read more about their individual features from their own sections on this site.

What about the other directories? Well, there are a few other interesting ones you might want to submit to, but they are far less important than the "big two" above. Do submit to them if possible, but focus on Yahoo and DMOZ, since they provide way more traffic.

OK, now you know where you should submit to. But how do you actually submit? It is relatively simple. Nearly all directories consist of different categories and subcategories, each consisting of sites related to the name of the category. You'll just need to find the category (or more often, subcategory) that best fits the topic of your site.

This can be done by either browsing through the directory or by doing a search on the keyword that best describes your site - often the directory will return a few categories that are relevant to your site and you'll just need to choose the one that seems to be most accurate. Usually, it is best to submit to the most detailed category that applies to your site; if your site is about programming in C++, you should submit to >Computers>Programming>C++ instead of >Computers>Programming>.

It is wise to spend some time to search the most accurate category for your site, since submissions done to the wrong categories are usually just thrown out. In addition, the category you submit to will be the category you're going to be stuck with for the rest of your site's life, and getting stuck in the wrong category might cost you some heavy traffic.

The submission process
After you've found the right category for your site, it is time to move on to the actual submitting process. This is an even more delicate part than the last one, so keep on your toes. The first thing to do is to carefully read the directory's rules and instructions on how to submit. They are usually displayed when you are beginning the submission process. Read them over a couple of times and follow them to the letter.

Nearly all directories will ask you to give the title of your site and a description of it when you are submitting. Put some thought in creating these, because they can significantly boost or reduce the amount of traffic you'll get from the directory. When writing your description, don't stuff it with words like 'best' or 'cheapest', and don't use ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. Write a short (15-25 words) description that accurately describes your site, and try to make it sound like an impartial review.

It would be also a good idea to check how the descriptions of the other sites in the same category are written and use them as a model. If possible, make sure that one or two of your best keywords are included in the description, but don't just stuff them there. Your description should sound like it's a natural sentence. If the editor thinks your description is little more than a list of keywords, he'll reject it and write a new one that may not include even a single keyword. Having one or two of your most important keywords in your description often helps your site to be found when a user searches the directory instead of browsing it.

If you later decide that the description you entered the first time isn't good enough, it is possible to contact most directories and try to get your description changed to a better one. Unfortunately, it is usually very difficult and very time-consuming to get directories to change the description of your site at a later date. Thus, it is heavily recommended that you try and get it right the first time.

Your title should be brief, it is not a place to list all your products and services. If possible, the title should include your most important keyword in it and start with a letter that is near the beginning of the alphabet. 'Automobile World' is better than 'World of Automobiles', because many directories list sites in alphabetical order and getting listed near the top can boost your traffic from the directory.

Since the title MUST be the official title of the site and it must be used on your pages, this might require you to change the name of your site. In addition to this, the title must sound like it just happens to start with a letter near the beginning of the alphabet, or it will get edited. The actual title of this site is 'A Promotion Guide', but Yahoo listed me as 'Promotion Guide, A', since the Yahoo editor thought the 'A' was included just to get to the top of the list. The same rules that apply to the description apply to the title - no promotional hype, no all capital letters.

After you have entered all the information, remember to check it for any possible typos or errors in spelling. Be extra careful with your URL, since a typo in it would naturally result in your site never getting reviewed. Then, say a quick prayer (in the case of Yahoo, at least two prayers) and hit the submit button. Good luck!

You'll usually get an E-mail if your site is accepted, but rarely if it is rejected. It is thus sometimes hard to know whether your site has been reviewed and rejected or if it is still unreviewed. If you don't get an E-mail after a few days and your site has not appeared to the directory, don't panic. Wait a few weeks until resubmitting your site; many directories are flooded with submissions and will get annoyed if you don't give them enough time to process the submission.

Ranjing high on google

Ranking high at Google - key number one
While there are numerous things measured by the Google algorithm, one thing seems to outweigh every other aspect. I'm talking about listings in the Open Directory Project. Google seems to heavily favor sites and pages that are listed in there. At the very least, you will have to be able to get your root/index page into the ODP. Attempt to include your most important keywords in the title and in the description you submit to the ODP. Having these words in the name of the category you're submitting to or in the URL you submit are also things that might have a positive effect, but I am unsure whether they produce a significant benefit or not.

After you have been able to squeeze your index page into the directory, try to do the same to as many of your subpages as you can. ODP's rules state that in most cases, they will only list one page per site, but I've seen plenty of sites that have at least five subpages listed. Be careful while doing this, because excessive submitting can in extreme cases result in all of your pages being dropped from ODP and your site banned for life.

The minimum requirement is to make sure that each page has plenty of useful, unique content that is relevant to the category you are submitting to. It might also pay off to keep a brief "cooling off" period in between submissions. Never, ever even attempt to get all of the pages on your 200-page site into ODP.

Again, include your most important keywords both in the title and the description you submit to the ODP. For example, if you sell cars in your online store called "Auto Shop", have a subpage about Ferrari Testarossa and you want it to rank highly for those words, the title and description you submit to ODP should be something like:

Title: "Auto Shop's Ferrari Testarossa page"

Description: "Read about the history of Ferrari Testarossa, learn about its driving characteristics, visit a gallery of pictures or buy the thing!"

Got it? For each page, select one unique keyphrase, get it into the title and the description and submit. Choose the keyphrase carefully, because once you've submitted, it can be difficult to change the information you have entered. Repeat this process as many times as you dare, selecting content-rich pages from your site and submitting them into different categories.

This is a case of greed versus fear - if you're too frightened to try, you'll never get anything. But if you let your greed push your brains into the background.. you'll lose everything you already had. Should you want to get further details on submitting your website to the ODP, simply read my article about the subject.

Ranking high at Google - key number two
At this point, you hopefully have at least one, but preferably a couple listings at ODP with perfect descriptions and titles. The next part is to optimize the HTML code of the pages to match Google's algorithm as well as you can. While I believe that the ODP listings are the most important factor in the ranking, a completely unoptimized page that is listed in ODP can certainly be beat by a well-optimized page that is not in it. Of course, the best combination is a page that is both optimized and listed in the directory, what is exactly you should shoot for.

OK, let's take a look at the various areas of page optimization for Google:

Title: The keyword or phrase should be included in the title of the page. However, it is probably best to include other words in addition to the keyword as well. For single keywords or two word phrases, I'd consider a title of 3-5 words in length to be the best choice.

Headings: Placing the keyphrase in a H1 or H2 heading at the very beginning of the page seems to work well. I have seen pages that rank high without headings, but it would seem to me that a good heading makes the job a bit easier. For the heading, I generally use just the keyword or keyphrase without adding any other words into it. If the page in question is a very long one, using a H3 heading with the keyword in it every now and then to retain the focus doesn't seem to hurt.

Density: Google doesn't seem to be too picky about keyword density, just as long as the keyphrase is found often on the page. In many cases, Google seems to tolerate and even like very high keyword densities.
The page should be somewhat "front-heavy", meaning that you should work the first instance of the keyword somewhere very near to the beginning of the page and make it appear once or twice fairly close to this first keyword, scattering the rest across the page.

Special words: Including the keyword in link text or in bold text does seem to give a slight advantage, but is not mandatory in my opinion. If I would have to choose between the two, I'd see using the keyword in link text as more important than using it in bold.

Meta tags: Not useful with Google, but you won't get into trouble for using the standard keyword and description tags either. Include them or leave them out, your choice.

Link popularity: As said, ODP links are gold, but links from other respected sources, especially Yahoo, can be very valuable as well. Links from normal pages, if you have a large number of them pointing at the page you're optimizing, will provide a good edge against the competition.

Click popularity: Not in use.
There you have it, the outlines of the Google algorithm as seen by me. Not very complicated, is it? I hope that the information you've read has been detailed enough to give you some ideas on how to improve your ranking and get more traffic to your site.
